The general consensus is that the Tribulation is discussed in the ninth chapter of The Book of Revelation. However, who will or won't experience the Tribulation is a question of interpretation. What camp you lie in, be it Pretrib, Prewrath, Midtrib, or Post-trib, is a matter of your personal interpretation. There are no clear indications within scripture to point in one direction or other.

ANOTHER ANSWER:

The "Tribulation" or "GREAT Tribulation" is mentioned ONCE by Christ in the 21st verse of Matthew 24... and it's from this one passage in the King James Version of The Bible upon which the world's religions have expanded.

"For then shall be GREAT TRIBULATION, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be." (Matt.24:21 KJV)

Christ is telling His disciples in this chapter of the signs to watch for that will inform them whether or not the time of His return is near. Great Tribulation on planet earth like "no other time in history"... and like no other time in the future... a concentrated global persecution of His church; will mark the "beginning of the end of God's plan.

The [NLT] "New Living Translation" calls the Great Tribulation: "...a time of GREATER HORROR than anything the world has ever seen or will ever see again." (same verse)

The [WEY] "Weymouth's New Testament" calls it: "...a time of GREAT SUFFERING...".

Taken together with the other prophecies... it will be a time of such great global panic, that the nations of the world, under Satan's guiding hand over its governments [see Luke 4:5-6], will make their one last final attempt at ONE-WORLD GOVERNMENT. Satan will bestow upon a man, which the Bible calls "the Beast" [see Rev.13] his own wicked power:

"...it was to the Dragon [Satan] that he owed his power and his throne and his wide dominion." (Rev.13:2 WEY)

But, regarding whether or not God's people will be on the earth during this soon-coming time of "Global Horror" or "Great Suffering" or "Great Tribulation"... Jesus informs us that INDEED THEY WILL BE ON EARTH!

Finishing up His revelation regarding the "Great Tribulation"... Jesus told His disciples [and us through this written record:

"In fact, unless that TIME OF CALAMITY is shortened, THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE WILL BE DESTROYED. But it will be shortened FOR THE SAKE OF GOD's CHOSEN ONES." (Matt.24:22 NLT)

Most people, if they bother reading it at all, gloss over these words without grasping their meaning. It means that God is going to have to shorten this coming GLOBAL HORROR SHOW in order to SAVE HIS CHURCH THAT's STILL ON THE EARTH. And that's the REASON He gives for cutting it short.

He says that ALL LIFE ON EARTH would cease if He doesn't shorten it... but His Chosen Ones [His saints] on the earth are WHY it will be shortened.

This is obviously a case of the unleashing of every deadly pox known to man; from nukes to chemical and biological weaponry [not to mention things still on the drawing boards].

Revelation chapter 12 is an "inset chapter" recorded by John. It's like a "flashback" in the narrative, informing the reader of certain background information about Satan's role in world history; past, present and future. Chronologically, as you near the end of the chapter, you are given a glimpse of the "Great Tribulation" and Satan's end time persecution of God's church [the "woman"]. This eye-opening prophecy [for those with the eyes to see it] tells us of God's church ON THE EARTH during this global persecution:

"...he pursued the woman who had given birth to the Child. But she was given two wings like those of a great eagle. This allowed her to fly to a place PREPARED FOR HER IN THE WILDERNESS, where she would be cared for and protected from the Dragon for a time, times, and half a time [3 1/2 years; not 7].

"Then the Dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from its mouth. But THE EARTH HELPED HER by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that gushed out of the mouth of the Dragon." (Rev.12:13-16 NLT)

Heaven is never called a "wilderness" by God. The EARTH is a wilderness... physically and spiritually. And if God's church is wafted up to heaven, as some believe... why does THE EARTH have to help the woman?

Just some things to consider. It's on EARTH where God confined sin, Satan and the demons [see Jude 1:6] that followed him in his rebellion against God in the beginning. It's on EARTH where the Final Judgment will happen. It's on EARTH where God intends to utterly defeat all disobedience and rebellion [sin] against His laws [I John 3:4].

It's God's SAINTS ON EARTH who are being trained to JUDGE in accordance with God's Word [the Bible; the books of which shall be opened on Judgment Day as their measuring stick for all nations]. It's in the midst of sin ON EARTH where character is forged in a person [good character or bad character; personality]. So, God's chosen ones need to be ON EARTH! The promises of God to so-called "Christians" are the same promises He gave to Faithful Abraham... and those were TWO:

One was the Promised LAND [not heaven]. And the second was SALVATION for all the nations through Christ; that "all the families on earth would be BLESSED through him.

"And now that you belong to Christ, you are the True children of Abraham. YOU ARE HIS HEIRS, and now ALL THE PROMISES GOD GAVE TO HIM BELONG TO YOU." (Gal.3:29 NLT)

But did God promise Abraham that he would inherit heaven? No!

"It is clear, then, that GOD's PROMISE to give THE WHOLE EARTH TO ABRAHAM and HIS DESCENDANTS was not based on obedience to God's law, but on the new relationship with God that comes by Faith." (Rom.4:13 NLT)

All of mankind needs to be ON THE EARTH... including God's church... because earth is where sin has been confined. And on earth is where sin must be confronted... and overcome... and ultimately DEFEATED! Even CHRIST had to face it and overcome it.

"Because of our Faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's Glory. We can rejoice, too, WHEN WE RUN INTO PROBLEMS AND TRIALS [KJV: tribulations], for we know that THEY ARE GOOD FOR US - they HELP US TO ENDURE. And endurance DEVELOPS STRENGTH OF CHARACTER in us, and character strengthens our confident expectation of Salvation." (Rom. 5:2-4 NLT)

Life is a PAIN... get over it. You can try to avoid it... that's only natural... but everyone has to endure it, sooner or later. It's just that God's church [called-out-ones] are SUFFERING FOR CHRIST's SAKE!

"And since we are His Children, we will share in His treasures - for everything God gives to His Son, Christ, IS OURS, TOO. But if WE ARE TO SHARE HIS GLORY, we must also SHARE HIS SUFFERING." (Rom.8:17 NLT)

Was Jesus Christ spared tribulation... or was He plunged headlong into it? Was He removed from pain and suffering... or was He handed the worst?

The self-righteous fable of "Christian retirement" foisted on the world by Satan is A LIE!

It's Satan whose greatest desire is to go to heaven. It NEVER WAS God's promise to anyone.

"For you said to yourself, 'I WILL ASCEND TO HEAVEN and set my throne above God's stars [angels]...." (Isa.14:13 NLT)

The "rapture theory" is Satan, feeding deceived man a lie of being wafted off to "safety" and "comfort" and "ease" in a world fraught with pain, suffering, misery and death. And many have fallen for it.

God doesn't tell His servants that they won't be on earth during the coming "Great Tribulation." He tells them that He will have to intervene in the affairs of men at that time and CUT THE TRIBULATION SHORT... or they would perish with all the rest of life on planet earth if man [and Satan, man's chosen god] were allowed to follow their destructive ways to its logical conclusion.

So, God will shorten up the Great Tribulation "for the sake of His saints, His elect, His chosen ones" -- who will be under the direct persecution of Satan [see Seal 5; Rev.6], right here on earth with the rest of deceived mankind... and every other living thing.

Barbara R. Rossing (The Rapture Exposed) says that television preachers like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Jack Van Impe and others preach the seven years of post-Rapture tribulation so constantly that many Americans assume it must be in the Bible. However, the so-called Tribulation is actually a nineteenth-century concept put forward by by John Nelson Darby, a British evangelical preacher and founder of the Plymouth Brethren. Reading the Bible without this preconception, you will not find the 'Tribulation' mentioned or described anywhere.

It can be found in Revelation 6:9-11; Revelation 9 and 12. God protects His faithful followers but will allow some members of His Church to be persecuted and even martyred in verse 17:

Revelation 12:14-17New International Version (NIV)14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

The term Great Tribulation comes from Jesus' Olivet Prophecy. "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place...then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains... For then there will be great tribulation" (Matthew 24:15-16, 21,29). As unequaled days of suffering defined by Jesus:

Mark 13:19New International Version (NIV)19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again.

The 'Great Tribulation' is how Jesus describes history's worst-ever time of widespread tribulation. Other prophecies that refer to this time of unprecedented suffering are Jeremiah 30:7; Ezekiel 5:9 and Daniel 12:1.

What were the strengths of Christianity that enabled it to triumph over all of its rivals?

The strengths of Christianity boil down to one thing, and that is the One true God of the Bible. Christians can do nothing by themselves, but must rely on the God of the Bible for strength. According to the Bible (New Testament) Jesus Christ is the Son of God/ and God and Christianity is made up of followers of God through Jesus Christ. True believers are empowered for all that God wants them to do. The Bible tells us that in the end believers will triumph because of their belief in Him.
