We now know that much of what we know as the Hebrew Bible was written by the 'Deuteronomist' source during the reign of King Josiah ( about 640-609 BCE), although of course the books written by the Deuteronomist contain a great deal of material that had been written down by authors several centuries earlier. Certainly some of the material in Genesis appears to to date back to the 8th and 9th centuries BCE. Some material in Genesis is probably older than that in Exodus.
We now know that both Genesis and Exodus were written in stages over a period of several hundred years during the early to middle parts of the first millennium BCE. It is very likely that some of the traditions in Genesis were written down before any material in Exodus, but we can not be sure of the relative completion dates, which occurred in early post-Exilic times.
