First of all, The Lord of the Rings is not a "series," but rather one book published in three volumes. To call it a 'trilogy' is erroneous, though the story as a whole is divided into six "books." With that out of the way, it is best to start with The Fellowship of the Ring, as the rest of the story makes very little sense without it.
On a side note, it is a good idea, though not strictly necessary, to read The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings first.
