This claim seems to have originated from a single source, Banned Books 387 B.C. to 1978 A.D., by Anne Lyon Haight, and Chandler B. Grannis, R.R. Bowker Co, 1978, but there appears to be no corroborative evidence to substatiate the claim available online.
Books banned in China include: Animal Farm; Alice in Wonderland; Big River Big Sea; Green Eggs and Ham; and others.
Because it's an embarrassment to China's cultures.

Yes, some of Walter Dean Myers' books have been banned or challenged in various schools and libraries. For example, his book "Fallen Angels" has been banned in some places due to its language and depictions of war.
