The Fresian breed originated from the Fresland region of northern Netherlands. Used as war mounts in the 12th and 13th centuries, they are thought to descend from the primitive breed called Forest Horse. Recognized by their jet black color and large, silky feathers the breed almost went extinct several times but are now enjoying a new popularity as a versitile sport horse.
