As a general statement any dog who has the potential to indicate a prey ( an object,harmfull material etc) by the erect staying body language can be called as a pointer dog! but there are dogs that had been specificaly bred for centuries for this sole purpose are german short haired,long haired pointer,english pointer and some others. used in hunting its in thier blood or if given a good training to enhance this feature of dog,it will run around in zig zag manner until it finds a bird like quil,or game bird and then erecting,narrowing its body towards it to show its master that the bird is in its sight.
