The breed of horse that is slaughtered most is the American Quarter Horse. This horse also happens to be the horse that is most commonly over-bred. We should stop massacring the American Quarter Horse.
Any horse really is capable for slaughter but the Brumby horse is most common for slaughter, witch even led to public outrage in the 1960's!
Thoroughbreds are the most common. If they can't race anymore or are too slow they go to slaughter.
Unfortunately horses are still slaughtered for their meat.
People make it into dog food
There is no slaughter age for a horse. Horses can and are slaughtered at any age provided they meet specific drug testing requirements and are slaughtered in a slaughterhouse that has funded meat safety inspections.
Any state in the USA could legally slaughter horses at one time. Horses were slaughtered for many years and their meat used in the pet food industry. Technically horse slaughter was not made illegal, The inspection of slaughtered horses by USDA veterinarians was defunded by the federal government.
For the year 2009 Canada produced 18,000 lbs. of horse meat. That's a lot of horses. I couldn't find numbers specifically for Calgary.
Because the japenese like the meat even though it's poisenous
Horse and pony slaughter, referred to only as horse slaughter is when horses are slaughtered for human or animal consumption. In some countries horse meat is considered a delicacy and so horses are eaten. Some countries also allow horses to be processed and made into pet food.
The horse is a prey animal, and generally today horses are not eaten by anything, unless out in the wild or sold to be slaughtered. If a horse is sold at an auction to be slaughtered the horse is generally of no use to the owner or is too old. Wild horses in the US are usually smart enough to avoid being eaten but foals or injured horses might be attacked by mountain lions/cougars, wolves, and sometimes grizzly or black bears. Domestic horses may also get attacked by such predators.
You would quit buying meat, lowering the demand for slaughtered animals by your share.
White Castle meat comes from slaughtered cows.
Belgians are still used as working animals, but have also become popular as show horses, and pleasure riding horses. The Brabant and related breeds remaining in Belgium today are also desirable for horse meat, producing a tender meat that is considered a delicacy.
There are many known predators (mostly mountain cats) who attack horses, but also humans who kill horses for their meat. Seen as a pest, brumbies (wild Australian horses) were slaughtered in large numbers in the 1960's, which led to public outrage. In the US, horses are threatened by wildcats, dogs, snakes, gators (in the southeast US), other horses, and of course humans.
