Witmann died during the Battle of Normandy. Wittman was killed when he and his tank crew encountered the British 7th Armoured division. He destroyed 13 light tanks, 3 medium tanks and 5 artillery guns before he and his tank was destroyed by Joe Ekins, trooper of the british Northamptonshire Yeomanry
