Japan fielded it's first assault rifle in 1989. This rifle is the Howa Type 89, which is still the current issue rifle of Japanese Self Defense Force.

Type 89 uses NATO standard 5.56x45 ammunition. While it has a magazine interface which is compatible with M16/STANAG 4179 type magazines, it requires a different type of follower in order for the bolt catch to hold the bolt open after the last round is fired.
