I don't know about the warranty, but the unit will run fine using an extension cord IF you buy one that is heavy-duty. Look for a cord that is 12 gauge or even 10 gauge. If you use a 14, 16, or 18 gauge cord (these may be too small), the unit could be damaged.

How do you connect 480 volts to a 230 volt transformer?

First. You should not attempt this unless you are an electrician and KNOW what you are doing. Second: Ensure transformer is rated for 480 primary and 120/240 secondary. Third: See step One... But if you insist on doing it yourself, make sure your insurance is paid up.... On the Primary side of the transformer will be leads marked H1 H2 H3 etc. On the Secondary side the leads will be marked X1 X2 X3 etc. Look on the nameplate data on the transformer. It should tell you if it is rated for 480volts and should have a wiring diagram on it... If it does not, get one that does to ENSURE that you have the correct transformer.... Why don't they just use 440 vac capacitors for all condensers and get rid of 370 vac capacitors?

Because when a fan motor (or compressor), is designed to operate on a 370 VAC run capacitor, that will be its optimal efficiency operating design. We're talking about capacitors used on an A/C in a typical 230 volt power supply to a residence or business. If you substitute a 440 VAC run cap in place of the 370 cap, the motor will seem to operate just fine. However, if you put an amprobe on the motor, you will find an increase in the amps it is drawing. This translates to increased heat in the windings, and some motors can handle a small heat rise while others have a problem with it. It partly depends on the airflow over the fan motor along with the quality of the motor, but in any event, you are decreasing the life of the motor along with paying for the electrical current you're wasting, and also, not using the specified cap the motor calls for, in most cases, will void the motor's warranty. The worst place to substitute a 370 VAC cap with a 440 VAC cap is on a compressor. The increased heat load in the windings causes an increase in head pressure and on some compressors already operating at high head pressure and heat load, the compressor can trip off and will stay off until the shell cools down. Of course, the additional amp draw in the compressor will really drive up the power bill. Bottom line, use the cap the motor specs call for. If you have to substitute to get-by because you don't have the right one on your truck, go back the next day and put the right one in. George Henne--Retired A/C Tech----

How often should a breaker box be replaced?

When it fails. You have no way of knowing "IF" something is about to happen to the breaker. If it fails in the open position it i snot a danger, but an inconvenience because it must be replaced. If it fails because it doesn't trip under an over-current situation it could cause damage in the panel, wiring or potentially cause a fire. Unfortunately there is no way to predict this and take preventative action.

Finding the Right Hot Tub?

When considering hot tubs and which one is right for you, there are a number of features that should be considered. Take them all into account, decide which are essential, and which are optional so you can make a wise choice for an investment that will be with you for years to come.Reliability: While prices can range widely one thing that should not be compromised on is reliability. The quality of materials, components, and construction are important as this is one home improvement you don’t want to have to be repairing any time soon. There are only a few major spa manufacturers so the more important issue is the dealer you purchase one from. Have they been in business for a while and what kind of reputation do they have in your area? Don’t hesitate to ask for a list of satisfied customers. If possible see if you can gain permission to speak to one of them. Be sure and check out the warranty carefully.Size and Comfort: The size hot tub is usually dictated by how much space you can allocate for one and how many people you want it to accommodate. If possible, seek to “wet test” the spa you settle on. That is only sure way to know it meets your comfort requirements. Things to look for include ease of entry and exit, foot-well space, seating depth, access to controls, and headrest comfort.Air Jet System: Many hot tubs feature an air jet system that produces air bubbles from fittings throughout the spa to provide a very gentle soft–tissue massage. While this isn't an essential feature, many people enjoy the sensation it provides. If a strong massage is desired check out the spas hydrotherapy performance.Maintenance: If possible, get a spa with a Corona Discharge ozone generator. These reduce the quantity of sanitizer needed while providing superior water clarity and purity. Higher end spas should have circulation pumps that ensure water is constantly filtered while maintaining uniform temperature.Safety: Only use a certified electrician to connect your unit to electrical service. If your spas is outside it should have a locking spa cover. Check to ensure the hot tub is listed by an independent testing agency like UL or ET.Take this check list with you and remember to ask the sales representative to address each of these issues.

Can you convert a hard wired fixture into a plug in type?

If you are taking the fixture down yourself, please be careful. BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, MAKE SURE THE BREAKER IS TRIPPED ON THE LINE YOU ARE WORKING ON. DO NOT RELY ON A SWITCH BEING IN THE "OFF" POSITION. IN OLD CONSTRUCTION, FIXTURES WERE OFTEN WIRED HOT WITH ONLY A SWITCH LOOP TO THE SWITCH. Ok, you have to start by "reverse engineering" - you have to figure out how the fixture was attached to the wall or ceiling. Once you've got it off the wall or ceiling, but before you take the wires off, look at what you've got. IIf the fixture and the wiring in the house is newer, you'll see a white wire wired to a white wire and a black wire (and maybe a blue one) wired to a black wire. You may see the green, or grounding wire, or it may be just tucked away somewhere. If your fixture is not color coded, but your house wiring is, get some masking tape and a sharpie and label which fixture wire was attached to which color wiring in the house. If your neither your fixture nor your house wiring was color coded, then you're dealing with a very simple fixture and the direction of the flow of current is not such a big deal. Simple light fixtures with simple switches in them can be like that. So after everything is labeled, go ahead and disconnect the wires. If you're not replacing the fixture with something newer, make sure you wire-nut the loose wires in the wall and put a nice, solid, blank cover plate over the box in the wall. Ok, now comes the fun part. TO WIRE UP THE FIXTURE: seriously, the easiest way to do it is to go to a local hardware store, old fixture in hand, and ask somebody to show you what to do. Once you've done it once, you'll find out it's SUPER DUPER EASY and you'll be fine. You can pick up really cool fixtures from Habitat for Humanity "ReStores" which sell salvaged building supplies. If you totally disassemble a light fixture, rub it down a little with steel wool, and spray a few coats of rustoleum on it, you can get some pretty jazzy fixtures for very, very little cost. Take lots of pics with your digital camera while reverse engineering to help you in the reassembly state. This can be fun to do! I've converted some ugly old dark metallic and shiny brass finished fixtures to plug-ins - wall sconces make great reading lamps that way. ANd the ReStore has all kinds of funky globes for the light fixtures for just a few bucks each. Have fun! As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourselfon electrical circuits, equipment or appliances, always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.
