Donkeys have the ability to learn between 50 and 100 command words, similar to the way a dog learns to "sit", "come", "stay", etc. Basic words that donkeys can learn are "back", "right", "left", "trot", "walk", "go", etc. So, based on their ability to associate words with actions, they have the ability to learn to do a lot of things. Donkeys are extremely intelligent and are constantly figuring things out, quite often just by watching people or other donkeys do things. Typical simple "tricks" that they can learn can be rolling a plastic barrel across the ground or picking things up from the ground with their mouth when asked to do so, etc. Actually the sky is the limit, as donkeys will do many things for you as long as you can be trusted by them.
Female donkeys are used to protect goats and other animals from coyotes. Males are normally not used for this as they might attack the animals. Some donkeys are used as companions for retired racehorses, overly excited horses, and just plain old horses. A lot of donkeys are used as pets. Some drive carts. Others are breeding donkeys. Back in olden days, they produced milk; they still might. Some are entered in shows. Others are ridden, which I do with my donkey.
Donkeys are able to pull carts or carry large bags on their backs. They are very good guard animals of sheep and goat herds, their bray and ability to run is a deterrent for predator animals.
