As soon as you are alerted, grab any possessions you wish to keep* (do not take long as this is risking your life) and run to the nearest hilly area, mountain, tall land etc. If there is no hilly ground then keep on running. Don't slow down as the tsunami may defeat you.
*This is optional, but if you really want to save your valuables then take them.

You can reduce effect of tsunami but there is no way you can avoid it for certain, area which are most likely to get hit by tsunami are area near sea and ocean (large amount of water) and area which also has high earthquake zone. If you are not affected by these two factors you are very unlikely to get hit by the tsunami.
Nothing can be done to avoid tsunamis. However, measures are in place to minimise the effects of tsunamis. Effective, early warning systems and technological equipment to detect seismic action both play a major part.
Wind can't form a tsunami. A tsunami is only caused by a large displacement of water. This is done only by an earthquake, a volcano eruption, a landslide, or a meteorite impact.
