How can we prevent water pollution?

The next time you go to a supermarket, look down the aisle of cleaning products and detergents. What you see will soon be purchased, used, and then washed down the drain or flushed. This includes things like drain cleaners, shampoos, hair dyes, and beauty products. Remember, that everything that goes down our drains we have to pay for our sewage treatment plants to try to clean out.

Now think in terms of the manufacturers of these all these products and the waste from their plants. What they discharge is regulated by the government, but even small amounts of contaminants when you add up all the manufacturers is cumulative. Then add in all of the other products manufactured and add in their small contribution of contaminants. In addition, all of the exhaust particles (soot) from every vehicle that is driven eventually gets washed down sewers and into waterways. Any trash or debris on the land also gets washed into sewers and into the waterways.

An individual person can reduce, reuse, and recycle (and keep the trash picked up), which works as well for preventing water pollution as it does for preventing all pressures on the environment. The most important one is reduce; less going down the drain, less manufacturing, less transporting of goods.

Don't use fertilizer in the winter. why you would want to do that I don't know, but people do. The ground won't soke up all of the nutrients and the fertilizer washes into water sources causing algae to grow and fish to die.

In order to prevent water pollution, people should first remember to conserve. We should also use more environmentally friendly products, or "go green" as its now being called. Non-biodegradable products, such as tampons, should no longer be flushed, and we should always be careful to throw our trash away and not litter, because it can end up in our bodies of water.

In a lot of ways, a great deal of at-home water pollution can be prevented by watching what you use.

Think of it this way: the stuff we use around the house or put on our bodies ends up, at least in part, in our water runoff. Shampoo chemicals or shower gels and even antiperspirant? Down the drain and into the water.

Bleach and other toxic chemicals around the house? Same deal.

Non-organic produce's excess chemicals that comes off when you wash it (or when it's washed in the store, or when it's washed coming off the farm, or when it's put on the plants in the first place and it runs off into the water and pollutes the ground)? Same thing. As you can probably see, everything has a chain reaction. Where you put the chemicals into the water, chances are, those chemicals have a long production history like the one I just mentioned.

Be smart and look for alternatives. If you aren't satisfied with the alternative selection then raise your voice to the companies. You will probably be heard.
