The most common process is 2 steps:

  1. Run the flue gasses through a catalyst with excess oxygen to convert the SO2 to SO3.
  2. Bubble that through a tank of crushed limestone and water slurry to produce gypsum CaSO4.

Another process is also 2 steps:

  1. Run the flue gasses through a catalyst with excess oxygen to convert the SO2 to SO3.
  2. Bubble that through a tank of water to produce sulfuric acid H2SO4.

In either process, the gypsum or sulfuric acid can be sold.

How can you reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide released?

Some types of coal contain sulphur, and when burned, release sulphur dioxide; this is the major source of sulphur dioxide emissions. There are ways to scrub pollutants out of the smoke emitted by coal-burning power plants, however, I personally think that it makes more sense to stop burning coal and switch to other methods of power generation.

Why are many governments trying to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels?

Many governments, particularly in the European Union, are trying to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels in order to slow global warming and cliimate change. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, and increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases contribute to rapid increases in average global temperatures.

How do you reduce sulfur dioxide in coal fired power stations?

Using a method called flue gas desulphurisation which involves the addition of a calcium oxide. The calcium oxide basically absorbs the sulphur dioxide on its way out of the flues; economically, useful products are produced such as gypsum which can be used as plaster.

How does calcium carbonate reduce harmful emissions from coal-fired power stations?

Coal contains sulphur and when this is burnt(heated) sulphur dioxide is produced, this is a greenhouse gas. To remove this greenhouse gas, this gas is passed a mechanism like a shower that is able to dissolve it and make it an acid. Then this acid sulphur is neutralized with calcium carbonate to form calcium sulphate, water and carbon dioxided

Does an economical car reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air?

No car can actually reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, but an economical car will add less additional carbon dioxide to the air than a less economical one.

What would reduce acid rain?

Acid rain is caused by factories burning sulphur, which produces sulphur dioxide. Cars also burn fuel which contributes to acid rain, so if people walked more and factories reduced or in fact stopped the amount of sulphur they burnt, then we wouldn't have so much acid rain. Consider 6 billion weekly loads of laundry and all those cooked meals.

What are some ideas to stop global warming?

Factories have been putting up measures to reduce carbon dioxide produced and released into the air. Recycling is widely promoted to reduce rubbish incinerated, which produces carbon dioxide too. Saving electricity and reducing the use of petroleum are some methods to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and release of exhaust, which contributes to global warming too. Planting more trees can also help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and replace them with oxygen.

How do plants help fight pollution?

Plants reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and increase the amount of oxygen.

How can reducing sulfur content in fuel reduce acidic gas emission?

reducing the sulphur content in fuels will effectivily reduce the amount of sulphur realised into the atmosphere. In the gas phase sulphur dioxide is oxidised by reaction with the hydroxyl radical via an intermolecular reaction: SO2 + OH· → HOSO2· which is followed by: HOSO2· + O2 → HO2· + SO3 In the presence of water, sulphur trioxide (SO3) is converted rapidly to sulphuric acid: SO3(g) + H2O(l) → H2SO4(l) the lower the sulphur released into the atmosphere the lower the amount of sulphuric acid is formed
