If tarnished sterling silver jewelry is to be cleaned, a mixture of baking soda and water can be used. Mix just enough water and baking soda to make a paste then rub the paste on the sterling silver. Rinse and dry.
I have seen other solutions used including toothpaste on inexpensive jewelry, but toothpaste is abrasive and I would not use this on any jewelry worth anything.
