yes it is a source of hardware it's also called usb stick which stores portable hard-ware. :)
The reason why your removable hardware does not show up on the My Computer area of your operating system could be because it is not connected properly. It could also be because the hardware was not installed properly, so your system is not recognizing it. Try removing the external hardware and re-installing it.
