A hypotonic solution is one which is more dilute (less concentrated) than another, in this case the inside of the cell (the cytoplasm). An animal cell in a hypotonic solution will absorb water by osmosis and will swell up. If nothing is done to remove the extra water the cell will eventually burst! See: http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/labbench/lab1/watpot.html for a simple animation and good background information on osmosis. Here is an experiment you can do at home: http://c-lab.co.uk/default.aspx?id=28&projectid=56 And here is another one: http://www.hrsu.mrc.ac.uk/schools/pdfs/Potatoes%20and%20Osmosis.pdf
When an animal cell is in a hypotonic solution the cell will swell due to the movement of water into the cell and it will burst.

What would happen if a cell placed in a hypotonic solution?

When a cell is placed in a Hypotonic solution, the water diffuses into the cell, causing the cell to swell and possibly explode.

When placed in a hypotonic solution what will happen to the cell?

If cells are placed in a hypotonic solution the cells gain water. The hypotonic solution has lower solute concentration then the cell's cytoplasm so the water will enter via osmosis.

What would happen if you put liver cell in a hyptonic solution?

If an animal cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, there will be a net movement of water into the cell and it will eventually burst. If an animal cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, there will be a net movement of water out of the cell and it will shrink.

Why do human cells die in freshwater?

As, human cell is an animal cell. When it is placed in an hypotonic solution like freshwater,it will finally swell and burst

What is a hypotonic solution?

A hypotonic solution has a lower concentration of solutes compared to the solution it is being compared to. When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, water will move into the cell causing it to swell and potentially burst due to osmotic pressure.
