Because very few people study the intense subjects insocial science all I can give is an idea or suggestion:

Most of the time in this situation it is due to shock. The decision only became real as it we're when she did the the dumping. That then is when her sense of logic came in and gave her sense. Now she has sense she can't see the sense in dumping the other person.

Angry or hurt choices can be to blame making it no ones fault for the dumping as such seeing as the human mind isn't thinking to it's Maximum capacity when angry or hurt.

Forgiveness. Forgiveness can take some time, therefore if the choice was made after you (the person being dumped) did something to hurt the girl then over a short period of time (often on smaller choices, time can vary) can forgive you and then regret it.

The Whole Story. Expanding on the above answer, the hurt or angry judgment could be based around them only seeing a small part of a bigger story. The person again made a snap judgment and so when they got the full story they are filled with regret.

The term 'Dumped' or 'Dumping' could of been used in the wrong manner. It could of meant that the girl in question wanted some space for a short period of time to cool of. She may of said the word 'Dump' (or the past tense 'Dumped') however what she may of wanted to say is that she wanted a break. Now remembering she used the wrong word she probably will change her vocabulary to the social situation of 'Dumping' and then going back out with them rather than return together after a break as the original plan should of layed out in her mind.
