Aerobic and anaerobic are terms which refer to an organism's use of oxygen.

Aerobic organisms must live in an oxygen rich environment because oxygen is a necessary component for aerobic cell respiration. In Aerobic cell respiration, oxygen is used as the final electron acceptor in the process of oxydative phosphorylation in eucaryotic cells.

Anaerobic organisms are those organisms which do not have to use oxygen as the final electron acceptor in their electron transport chain because they have the ability to use some other molecule, for example sulfur.

When the atmosphere of the planet became oxygen rich, these oxygen intolerent organisms were nearly wiped out, and aerobic organisms evolved to take their place.
