Backspace key.
To delete a character to the left of the insertion point, press the backspace key once. The backspace key is marked with a left pointing arrow " <----- " and is usually next to the key marked with a plus and an equal sign.
The delete key "Del" will delete characters that are to the right of the insertion point (not to be confused with the cursor which is the mouse pointer).

Press the Delete key to remove a character on the right of the cursor.
The delete key removes the character above or to the right of the cursor. The backspace removes the character to the left of the cursor.
Del stands for "Delete".The delete key has multiple functions, based on what program you are running. In text editing, the Del key will remove one character to the right of the cursor, whereas backspace will remove one character to the left of the cursor.

Assuming you meant 'characters' - use the DEL key (instead of backspace). The DEL key erases the character at the cursor, moving the text from right to left. The Backspace key erases the character immediately to the LEFT of the cursor.
The cursor shows you where the next character will be.
Point your mouse cursor to the right of your character. Drag the cursor left, across the character in the chair. (Move it away to avoid dragging him back to the right.)

Press the F2 key to start editing the cell. Then use the arrow keys to get to the point in the text where you want to get rid of a character. If the character is to the left of the cursor, use the Backspace key. If it is to the right of the cursor, use the Delete key.
