A keyboard is an input device. Below the keys is a key matrix, or circuit board. When you press a key you complete the circuit for that key. They keyboard then sends the information either through a wire or wirelessly to the computer. The computer then takes the information and decides how to use it. Depending on the Operating system or running applications the computer decides how to use the information.
You have to get into your computer's BIOS, also called the Setup on some computers; from here you can define what your hard drives are and other hardware before your OS loads, including the on-board video. When you first turn on your computer, before the OS loads (such as the Windows screen or a GRUB loading screen), there will be some key or key-combo to press to access the BIOS. Usually it is something like the [F12] or [F9] key, or maybe [Del]. It should read the correct key to press on the screen (you may need to use the on-board video to see this), otherwise just try running your finger across all of the [F#] keys.
