Great advise many plants have succumb to more than it needs or to little.
You have to consider many things to make plants grow better but here are some steps to take that will give you a better chance.
Soil is the key building block. Test your soil for plants outside. Your local extension agent can usually have it tested.
The soil in pots will become salt heavy after years depending on water quality and how often you fertilize. If you have ever seen a pot with white crust that is salt deposits. When that happens the plant should be watered heavily several times and by that i mean water til it is running out the botton for a couple of minutes.
The plant should be repotted in a new or well wash used pot. The pot should be washed with soap and water, bleached,rinsed well and allowed to air dry in the sun. When using bleach 1 teaspoon gallon should be plenty.
When watering water well,an inch a week is typical for outside plants in the ground. When watering pots always water til the water runs out the bottom.
Put the right plant in the right place. All plants need to be put in places where they will get what they need.
Fertilize like the answer above said according to labeled instructions. More is not better when it comes to fertilizer.
The best thing to do is attend some of the free classes that are given in your area.
Contact your local extension agent or join the local garden club most don't have fee's or they are minimal
