This depends on where the swelling is and how much swelling there is. ALso was there an injury, or is age the factor here. More info would help to answer, but buffered aspirin and if the injury is within 24 hours heat for 15 minutes and then cold for 15 minutes, doing this for several hours. Really more info is needed to give you a better idea if it is serious and needs a trip to the vet.
