To find out the status of your credit, You need to get a credit report from a credit reporting agency. Here are the three national ones, Experian, Equifax and Transunion. You can get a free annual credit report from annualcreditreport.com. If after seeing your credit report you can afford to pay off some or all of the bills, try contacting a credit counseling agency and see if they can help you negiotate with your creditors a reasonable pay back play. If not try contacting each creditor and see what can be worked out. If you cannot afford to pay any of these bills, then that is okay. There is no reason to feel shame about what has happened, this happens to literally thousands of people everyday. Does this make yours any less traumatic, no just saying there are people out there who understand what you are going through. If you do just do one thing get a copy of your credit report and have someone explain it to you. After that just do what you can. I hope this helped. Please remember, I am not a credit expert, I am just speaking from expierence
