Male cats have anal glands that can get clogged, especially if the cat has not been neutered. A Vet can "express" the clog, which will make the cat less odoriferous (smelly). However, you should get the cat neutered, because the smell will lessen and likely not occur again. It can reoccur in an unfixed male cat.
Note: Same is true for male dogs.
