The native Americans did regard water as the source of life. They really valued water and put measure in preserving and protecting the water sources.
It depends on the source. If it is swampy and unclear, probably not potable (drinkable). If it is in a clear area without any marine life, go for it, but only if you boil it or add iodine, or any other methods of making it potable. Otherwise, not a smart idea.
