in a ten or five gallon tank, you can use one of the lids especially made for those tanks. Those are the only cages hermit crabs can live in, so if you don't have a glass 10 gallon tank, get one! Make sure the lid has airholes
It most definitely does, because...
Hermit crabs need their atmosphere to be humid, because they find it hard to breathe if the air is too dry, so in order to keep them healthy, every day you must spray (or use some other technique) to keep their air moist, and use the lid to retain the humidity. Also, hermit crabs need a warm environment, and by using a lid not only can you retain moisture, but also heat.
The lid does not have to be much, as long as it's solid enough to fit the above requirements. Our lid, for example, is just a hardcover book and a piece of cardboard, but it does it's job.

It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs. The hermit crab actually loves being with other hermits. It is called hermit crab because it is only one hermit crab in the shell. It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs. If it is a hermit crab, then it is like any other hermit crab, so just take care of it as you would to a regular hermit crab :)
you should put one on because it keeps the humidity in. If their humidity gets to low, they will suffocate.
