This question can be answered in several different ways. One way is to look at the cheapest cars on the market. The cheapest cars also have the cheapest engines. Naming a few examples, the Tata Nano, the Cherry QQ and the Maruti Suzuki are examples of some of the cheapest cars sold now, price ranging from a little more than $ 3000 to around $5000. So there are your cheapest engines, also. However, the cheapest cars and the cheapest engines may not be as cheap in the long run as they are on the day they are bought. If you buy a more expensive car and therefore a more expensive engine, the maintenance costs will very probably be lower in the long run than in the cheaper models. Buying the cheapest engine may not be a money saver in the long run. One thing a car buyer should look out for is this, how easy or difficult will it be to get engine parts. The big car makers of the world have many times the number of sales outlets and service stations than the smaller companies. This also means lower costs in hunting down the spare parts you need and or getting your vehicle serviced in dealer's garages.
