Many kinds of caterpillars change color and shape when they grow older. They molt their skin 5 times before they become butterflies and each time they look a little different, some kinds look drastically different. It would help to know where your caterpillar was found (country and town), and what plant it was crawling on because some kinds look similar to each other. not because they think it's a good idea to dress alike, but because many are poisonous to birds and all the caterpillars that don't look like the poison ones tend to get eaten, even if they live in different continents because the same birds migrate thousands of miles, and they do the choosing. So some caterpillars in the southern hemisphere look similar to a different kind in the northern hemisphere. for example a Pipevine Swallowtail larva from California, and some Heliconis (longwing) butterflies in Peru. Both are poison and black with red fleshy spikes.
