The great George Washington, after his presidential and military years, returned to the quiet life he preferred in Mount Vernon with his wife. One day in December 1799, Washington spent the day tending to work outside in freezing weather. He came inside and spent the rest of the day without changing from his soaked clothing, and started to tell his wife of a soar throat. This being 1799, no medicine was able to get to him quick enough to cure the sickness, if there was any, and he died two days later in his house.
