The alternator produces power to charge the battery. The battery powers the starter to turn the engine over.
You put a "load"on the engine; the alternator is energized, getting power from the engine in order to produce electricity.
Yes it does. The alternator will only produce voltage if it has a battery supply. The battery power is used to create a magnetic field in the alternator. Spinning the magnetic field induces an electric field in the stator windings. Then the alternator can produce power to recharge the battery and maintain the electrical supply to the engine and ancilliary circuits.Take away the battery, no electrics, engine dies. Plus, it can also cause an electrical spike that could damage the computer.

Bad alternator
Yes. Have had this happen to me. A serpentine belt is what brings power to both your alternator and your power steering pump. If the alternator isn't turned by the belt, it can't produce electricity, and your engine will stop. If the power steering pump isn't turned by the belt, it can't move fluid, and your power steering will quit working (note that you can still steer in an emergency, but it's VERY tough). Hope this helps. NJM
A bad alternator. Turning the steering wheel all the way is very demanding on the power steering which draws power from the engine and can cause the idle to dip down. A weak alternator is usually the cause for the stalling.
If the alternator fails, it is no longer keeping the battery charged and your engine is running on nothing but battery power. Once the battery runs down, your engine will no longer run.
go have your alternator tested. when they start to go out the alternator will create alot of drag on the engine but then work fine and the engine wont have the drag but the alternator wont put out the correct amount of amperage and the votage will drop increasingly
I had a similar problem in a taurus. I had to replace the alternator.
A battery does not produce power, it just stores power. The alternator produces the DC voltage the battery stores. As the power is taken from the battery it is replenished by the alternator.
The alternator.
Power is created by the engine to drive the car and to provide electrical power through the alternator.
