As the Earth orbits the sun, it's axis is on an angle (called the Axial tilt). This causes one hemisphere of Earth to be closer to the Sun and one to be farther away depending on what side of the sun it's on. Each pole will spend half of its rotation (half a year) pointing towards the Sun and away. When it's pointing towards the Sun, the hemisphere is closer to the Sun and so the surface of Earth will be warmer, causing summer. If the pole is pointing away from the Sun, the hemisphere will be further away, so the ground will be colder (Winter).
