He never was overt about it and rather hid it from the general population. He was so concerned about people knowing he wouldn't allow photos with him in his wheelchair and had a car, train, combination where he could drive a car out of a special car without leaving the car. He also arranged for a special car elevator to fit this car from his train on a visit to NYC. He stood when he gave speeches with the help of braces, but toward the end of the war he was seen more often in his wheelchair so by that time it was obvious.
