Was Lincoln racist when he was president?

Yes. Although, he was considered by many at the time to be quite progressive for the time, he was still influenced by race. This was most evident when Lincoln proposed a plan for African Americans to emigrate to Africa to Frederick Douglass. It may be argued that this was caused more by what was politically possible at the time, as treating blacks as equals was considered a radical concept at the time.
