Like so many volcanic eruptions it was caused by the rising of magma where an oceanic plate, the Juan de Fuca, descends under the continental North American plate. The resulting friction causes heat which turns the destroyed Oceanic crust into magma. Over time the build up becomes so great that it forces its way to the Earth's surface.
