When a major blood vessel is severed it causes catastrophic bleeding.

This includes:

The carotid artery, which is in your neck.

The Vena cava superior, at the center of the upper chest (near the heart).

The vena cava inferior, at the center of your belly.

The aorta, which is the largest starting at the heart and goes all the way down to the abdomen.

Common causes for the severing of such veins are gun fire wounds, shrapnel wounds, wild animal bites (may also cause infection), knife stabbs and cuts or any other sharp object that can cut you.
