Henry claimed the right to try clergy in royal courts
Thomas Becket was a troublemaker because he bought trouble and problems to Henry. When he resigned as chancellor this was called an unfriendly act and when Becket did this he decided that he would turn against the King and he would go along with the church as well . Also when he was in court he walked out and this was a very stupid thing to do and it caused trouble for Henry.
Henry II of England was reportedly whipped three times as part of a penance for his role in the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. This act of self-punishment was meant to demonstrate his remorse for Becket's death, which had caused a significant rift between the monarchy and the Church. The most notable instance of this penance occurred at the shrine of Becket in Canterbury.
