One reason is the geographic isolation. When the two isolated areas comprising of same species are different, Natural selection will gradually eliminate the weaker members until the difference between the two becomes big enough for it to not be able to reproduce. Once they cannot reproduce, they are of different species.
Speciation

Biographical observations suggest that a modification process caused new species to arise in the way that new species are showing up without explanation and with new adaptations to their environment. One example that is widely used is the appearance of opposable thumbs in humans and monkeys.
Cross-breeding occurs within the species.
they evolve to fill new niches
The general term for the process by which new species form is "speciation." Speciation occurs when populations of a species become isolated and diverge through various mechanisms, leading to genetic and phenotypic differences that eventually result in the formation of distinct species.

Geographic isolation is a way in which a new species can form. Isolation over a long enough period of time can result in a species evolving to have different traits.
According to the biological species concept, when the new species no longer can interbreed with the ancestral species, or with the population that it has been geographically isolated from long enough to have allele change significantly enough to prevent interbreeding.
Biogeographic observations indeed suggest that a evolutionary process caused new species to arise, through the process we call natural selection. This is due to an animals adaptability in it's environment.
