In 1622 and again in 1644, the Powhatan Confederacy, led by Opechancanough, attempted to drive the English settlers out of Virginia. These uprisings were motivated by the encroachment of English colonists on Native American lands and the desire to reclaim territory. Both attempts resulted in significant violence and loss of life, but ultimately the Powhatan were unable to expel the English settlers permanently.
