European settlement has resulted in so many New Zealand birds becoming endangered. When the white settlers came to the islands, they cleared native habitat and introduced new species which proved to be predators of these defenceless birds. Dogs, cats, stoats and ferrets have all resulted in the kiwi population being greatly reduced.
15% of New Zealand birds are endangered.

Two endangered animals from New Zealand are the Okarito Kiwi and the North Island Brown Kiwi. Kiwi birds are small, flightless, birds who eat worms, insects, and seeds, with very long and narrow bills. They are threatened mostly due to introduced predators, such as cats, pigs, and a type of weasel called a stoat, because they have no defense.
