It was 'started' by them- the goddess Eris had a golden apple that said 'To the Fairest' on it, which engaged Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera in a beauty contest. Zeus, not wanting to pick sides, had the help of Paris to select the winner. After being offered many things by the goddesses, he chose the prize of Aphrodite's- the most beautiful girl in the world, Helen. The only problem was, she was already married. This caused the fight between the Greeks and the Trojans over Helen. Throughout the war, the gods influenced many of the heroes and chose sides.
