∙ 11y agoa mantle plume rising up the African plate causing it to dome up and crack. The Afar is the triple junction, where the other two branches of the rift have already flooded to form seas, and the third arm went south to great the African Rift Valley as we see it today.
If it keeps going (rifting) the East African Rift may also flood with water and essentially separate Somalia from the rest of the continent.
