The bombing of Pearl Harbour by the Japanese. Up until 1941, there was no Japanese-American war. Simply Sino-Japanese.

This led to the increased American activity with the Chinese and eventually, in 1945 the USA bombed Japan back which signaled the end of the Second World War in Asia.

Unfortunately China continued fighting until 1949 in a vicious civil war.

They started it, They started it, Japan planned to conquer all of east and south-East Asia for her own benefit (calling it, ironically, the Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere) and America, with her large Pacific fleet, was viewed as the greatest potential obstacle to the plan. The Japanese Prime Minister, General Hedeki Tojo, against the advice of the Emperor and Admiral Yamamoto, decided that if the US Navy could be destroyed in one great blow, this would eliminate America as a threat. Hence the attack on Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately for Japan, the US carrier fleet was at sea that day, and the plan failed, leading to Japan's inevitable defeat, as the US carriers defeated the Japanese fleet at Midway, from which Japan never really recovered, and she was not equipped for a long war.
