HD is a genetically transmitted illness- you inherit the gene that causes it. This gene causes permanent changes in the neurons of the brain. There is a (rare) juvenile form of HD that affects children under the age of 10. For most people, symptoms begin to manifest at between the ages of 30-40- but earlier in some, later in others.
