PID or pelvic inflammatory disease is frequently cause by a more localized infection left untreated. It can be cause by multiple kinds of bacteria, such as the ones that cause chlamydia. The above example of the chlamydia infection would have been caused by a vaginal infection that was left untreated. The bacteria would have moved up into the pelvis through the cervix and become a much larger infection. PID will be treated differently based on what the cause is but generally you will get a pretty hefty dose of anti-biotics and checked again after two weeks. It may or may not affect your fertility. This depends on the severity of the infection, how long it was left un-treated as well as luck. It can be avoided by using condoms every time, getting regular check-ups and seeing your doctor if you are having any unusual discharge, itching, burning or other symptoms.
