There can be a number of causes for this, too many to list here. If you have not had a proper tune up within the last 80K miles then I'd recommend one since one is due anyway. This can cure many issues with driveability, though it is NOT a cure all.

Slow engine RPM is the main reason a car may be sluggish while accelerating. However, it also could be due to the oil.
sounds like a cv joint
It's more than likely that it needs a new fuel filter, spark plugs and ignition wires. While you are in there replace the air filter also.
mine does that aswell, its normal to do that it will run below 1000rpm etc
fuel pump and or filter/ catalitic converter
A worn out Universal joint in the rear driveshaft.
What kind of howling? Or is it a whining? Where does it sound like it's coming from.
you have a control vacuum leak, listen for hissing noise under dash when engine is running.
One thing that it could be is that your fuel injectors are clogged. You may also just have some bad gas in your vehicle.Ê
Lack of info Hesitation causes: Fuel filter, injector/s dirty, ignition problems are places to start
