carburetor or spark plugs
possible bad TPS, IAC, or ECT sensors
Bad spark plug?Bad plug wire?Bad valve?*Bad piston?* Do a compression check to check engine internal condition
probably got a bad IAC motor
if its only on idle it sounds like a bad injector
Not running on all cylindersBad plugs?Bad wires?Bad valve?Bad piston? Service engine light on?Have vehicle scanned to determine problem
i think it causes bad/rough idle
Mr. Potato Head
the engine to stall and surge at idle
There are several things that can cause high idle. An older carbureted engine may have a vacuum leak or sticking choke linkage. Newer computer controlled engines have an idle control device called an idle motor which could be faulty or receiving bad information from other sensors on the engine ( IE. temperature sensor ).
ABS brakes should have no effect on engine idle, but a bad power brake vacuum booster would have an effect on engine idle.
Most likely bad intake manifold gasket. When the engine is cold the engine shrinks which unseals the intake and allows a small amount of unregulated air into the engine causing it to idle rough. as the engine heats up it expands sealing the leak causing idle to improve. You should also get lean codes from the computer as the engine is running to lean. Very common problem with the DOHC engine. See "Related Questions" below for more
My guess is it will causes the engine to surge and change engine speed up and down over and over because the ECU (computer) is searching for the right idle speed, but the bad sensor isn't sending the signal. It could also possibly cause the engine to just idle at a higher speed than normal.
