Many different things can cause a mare to not produce colostrum. The most common reasons are illness, hormonal imbalance, and fescue toxicity. Fescue toxicity is the most common and the most preventable reason for lack of colostrum in the mare. Removing a pregnant mare from infected fescue grass is vital to preventing this problem.

Fescue grass also causes problems in joints, and possibly even an abort for a mare. I would make sure that she has plenty of clean water (no mud, algae, etc. in it) and get a few bales of premium hay for the lady. If you suspect fescue toxicity, do not waste time but I would call a vet to check her over well also.

When the wax falls off a mares teats will she deliver soon?

Could be. This is a sign that birth is near. But sometimes a mare will 'wax up' and the milk will start to leak out. A little is fine but if too much leaks out the mare could be loosing the "colostrum". Colostrum is the first milk that the mare produces and it contains all the immunities for the new baby to keep him healthy. If it leaks out before the foal can drink it, he won't live long. They have to have the colostrum. If you think your mare is leaking too much colostrum call your vet.

Who produces the best colostrum?

Women who just delivered a baby within 14 days produce colostrum. There is no "best" colostrum.

What is it called when colostrum leaks onto the nipples of the mare?

This is typically a sign that the mare will foal very soon. There is no real term for the leaking, but if enough of it leaks out the foal might not get enough and need a colostrum supplement. A mare will 'bag up' (her udders become full) about a day or possibly more before foaling also.

Which animal produces colostrum?

All mammals, including humans, sheep, and cows, produce colostrum. Colostrum is commonly known as beestings, bisnings, or first milk. It's produced by a female's mammary glands in the later part of their pregnancy, prior to birth.

When does the colostrum come in on a horse?

There is no magic time. Some mares may start to drip in the last month or so. But usually once the mare starts to drip or 'wax up' birth will follow with in 24 to 48 hours. If you notice that she is losing too much milk you should contact your vet. She may run out of colostrum before the birth and it is vital that the foal gets colotrum.* *Interesting fact:There is a window of oppotunity for the foal to get the colostrum. If he does not get the colostrum within 18 hours or so his GI tract will not absorb it which will greatly diminish his chance of survival.

If wife is pregnant with 1 month can she produce milk for her husband?

Women only produce colostrum, not milk, until they give birth. Most women can produce colostrum it by the time they are halfway through the pregnancy -- one month in is a little early. The most important factor to consider is whether the woman is interested in doing this.
