Something that sets off an allergy attack is known as an allergen. The list of allergens is almost limitless as every person is unique and different, thus they can be alelrgic to a variety of substances. The list below indicates some of the more common types of alergens: Seafood; nuts; dust; pollen; mold; pet dander (fur/skin); dairy products
Allergies are a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system. Hypersensitivity reactions require a pre-sensitized (immune) condition of the host. Basically, it is caused by the immune system attacking something that would normally be considered harmless.
An allergic reaction is usually a mild over-reaction of the immune system from a substance called an allergen. Allergens can include substances such as:
* Foods - especially peanuts, eggs, seafood, nuts, grains and milk
* Plants
* Pollen
* Medication
* Insect Stings - such as bees, wasps and ants
* Latex and Rubber Products
* Chemicals
* Mold

An allergic reaction is the body's way of responding to an "invader." When the body senses a foreign substance, called an antigen, the immune system is triggered. The immune system normally protects the body from harmful agents such as bacteria and toxins. Its overreaction to a harmless substance (an allergen) is called a hypersensitivity reaction, or an allergic, reaction.
The short answer is that the body reacts to an otherwise harmless material--ragweed pollen for instance--as if it were a dangerous material. A special type of protein molecule, an "IgE antibody," is produced in your body which targets that material, called the "allergen". That sets up a cascade of reactions which leads to the release of histamine and other irritating body chemicals causing the typical allergic reaction: itching, hives, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, even Asthma. Some people are more genetically prone to developing allergies. And then, what you are exposed to will determine what you become allergic to.
A lot of things can cause allergies such as, bee stings, pollen , certain animals, also dust or mold
Allergic reactions are genetically determined, and different substances cause contact dermatitis to develop in different people.
No.
An allergy is the reaction that the body will have, where as an allergen is something that causes the allergy to occur.
