I am going to assume this is a truck you're talking about. There may be ground metal in the rear causing the noise and interfering with the differential speed sensor. Drain the gear oil from the real. If the oil contains metal particles (sparklies) or is dark gray to black in color:
Replace all bearings in the rear. Replace the spider gears. Visually inspect each tooth of the ring gear and pinion gear for nicks, burrs or chips. If any are present, replace both of those gears, not just the obviously damaged one. Do not forget to use gear marking compound (bright yellow grease) to check for correct gear alignment when you're done. Fill with new gear oil of the correct type.
Problem with the Antilock Brake System, (ABS). The repair is best left to a professional.
It could be a fuse , a sensor , or some other problem with the Antilock Brake System ( as long as the red " BRAKE " light in your dash is not lit up you still have " normal " brakes )

Antilock Brake Light comes on and stays on when the ABS computer detects some problem with the antilock brakesystem components. You will still have normal brake use, but the Antilock system will probably not work as an Antilock brake system is supposed to work. ABS system diagnostic code readers are available and are recommended for diagnostic purposes, however fixing ABS systems is perhaps best left up to the Pros. . .
what causes the battery light to on a 2005 ford expedition to come on?
What causes ticking, check engine light, and the check gauges sensor to come on in a 1999 Dodge Durango 5.2L SUV?
If the ((ABS)) Light is on then it's a good thing indicating that the Antilock brakes sensor is in good condition. I too have a 2002 mountaineer

There can be several causes for the service emissions systems light to come on in a Ford Escape. The light can indicate an 02 sensor is out or it can indicate an exhaust leak.
